The mouse is a computer tool which is used alongside a keyboard to enhance a user’s ability to effectively operate the computer. The first computer mice functioned by virtue of a cathode ray tube in which a metal ball was rolled inside to create a pointer on the computer screen which could be used to access many different functions of the computer. The mouse debuted in a 1968 presentation delivered by Douglas Englebart. Englebart utilized a control console which was designed by Jack Kelley of Herman Miller. This control console featured a keyboard with an inset space attached to the right hand side which functioned as the very first mouse pad. A year later, in 1969, Kelley would go on to create the first mouse pad which we would most likely be familiar with today. It was no longer attached to the keyboard itself but now resembled the rubberized mats seen commonly in the present.

The mouse serves a variety of functions which include, making the mouse more comfortable for the user, preventing abrasion to the desk or table on which the mouse is used, and it prevents dust and other debris from collecting inside the mouse and thereby rendering the mouse less functional. Much has changed since the days of the first mouse pads, but they remain a popular office item nonetheless. Since the advent of the optical mouse, which used more sophisticated technologies, the need for a mouse ball waned. In the beginning, optical mice required special optical mouse pads with optical patterns printed on them to function. Nowadays a mouse pad isn’t even necessary for optical mice but they remain popular for the comfort they provide and their ability to protect the desktop surface. It is no longer possible for debris to collect inside of optical mice.

Mouse pads are made from a variety of materials which are selected wither because of needs specific to the sort of work being done or to reflect certain stylistic concerns. Custom mouse pads are now available which may reflect a person’s individual style, ergonomic needs, or to perform specific tasks such as architectural drafting on a computer.
